My Pilates Journey
My journey into becoming a Pilates Foundation teacher started after a neck injury in 1995. At the suggestion of my physiotherapist I began attending Pilates Classes to strengthened my core postural muscles and to developed my body alignment. I eventually regained full movement which ultimately gave me pain relief.
I trained at The Place in Euston, London, with Hana Jones, Susanne Lahusen and Sonja Noonan. The training also included an insight into the world of physiotherapy with Carole Traole, corrective yoga with Gary Carter and post and pre natal Pilates with Rachel Swindel.
Now when I teach Pilates, my challenge is to introduce the client to a series of movements to develop and strengthen their body as a whole and to invite them to become aware of their body so that postural correction and core strength is no longer a challenge.
My classical and evolved Pilates repertoire is influenced by other practices and will continue to be influenced as my journey continues.
Yoga is a constant in my life which adds a lot to my Pilates teaching. All my yoga teachers have been truly gifted. Among them Doug Keller, who has many years experience in addressing specific therapeutic problems with yoga, has been inspirational in aiding my understanding of yoga as therapy. I now incorporate basic stretches common to yoga to improve my client’s flexibility, ease tense muscles and to calm their minds. Other practises which influence my teaching are, Ideokinesis with Ursula Stricker and Gyrokinesis with Elaine Puren, this has added a certain flow to my repertoire.
In 2008, I started taking clients to Iceland on retreats, combining a cultural experience of the country with the wellbeing aspects that Iceland offers. Further information is available at www.icelandretreats.com
In August 2010 I will be running a Yoga/Pilates retreat in Sabina, Italy. Places are getting booked up so please check out the details for more information.
My journey into body movement continues, hope you can join me ...
